The Ministry of Justice is a major government department, at the heart of the justice system. We work to protect and advance the principles of justice. Our vision is to deliver a world-class justice system that works for everyone in society.

These pledges are being made specifically on behalf of the Climate Change and Sustainability Unit (CCSU) at MoJ.

1. We will continue to work closely with prisons and probation to promote and embed green jobs within prison industries, while simultaneously supporting stronger pathways into green jobs upon release.

2. We will upscale the training pilots we have delivered with external partners to upskill prisoners in sustainability, and support pathways into green jobs upon release.

3. We will commit to delivering sustainability outreach work with universities and schools, to offer support and advice on entering into sustainability roles.

4. We will offer coaching and buddying support for people in the team and new starters who specifically identify as belonging to a minority group. We will also encourage participation in our development and mentorship schemes designed to support colleagues from under-represented groups.

5. We will work towards securing candidates each year through programmes such as the Civil Service Summer Internship Programme and the Civil Service Care Leavers Internship Scheme.

6. We will recruit with the aim of increasing the diversity, while closely following the MoJ’s Inclusive Recruitment Guidance and Civil service Recruitment Principles.

7. We will ensure that throughout our work we align with the MoJ People Strategy which commits to developing a culture that is rooted in our values of: Purpose, Humanity, Openness, Together. We will also align with the MoJ Inclusion Approach priorities of D&I Designed In, Inclusive Culture and Representative Workforce.

8. We will acknowledge and celebrate key EDI awareness campaigns including, but not limited to, National Inclusion Week, Black History Month, LGBTQ+ Pride, International Women’s Day and Holocaust Memorial Day.

9. We will seek diverse input from a range of staff groups and networks where appropriate to challenge and inform development of policies, initiatives and services.
