Have your say about the barriers and difficulties that you face in the workplace, and how we can work together to resolve them.

Welcome to the People of Colour Network, an inclusive space for individuals identifying as People of Colour actively involved in sustainability, environmental roles, or within the profession. Our Network is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for open discussions on barriers, current concerns and innovative ideas that can be progressed through the Initiative.

In this space, authenticity is celebrated, and you are encouraged to express yourself freely. It’s a secure haven where you can voice any concerns without hesitation.

To join our Network, simply be actively engaged in a sustainability/environmental role or within the profession and identify as a Person of Colour. This includes individuals from Black or minority ethnic backgrounds. Your unique perspective and voice are valuable contributions to our collective journey towards a more diverse and inclusive profession.

What is the People of Colour Network?

Established in October 2021, this Network was born out of the industry statistics indicating a significant lack of racial diversity within our profession. Acknowledging the potential isolation experienced by People of Colour within the profession, IEMA took the initiative to create a dedicated Network. Our primary goal is to provide a space where People of Colour can freely voice their concerns and foster a supportive community within our professional landscape.

In this space, we celebrate diversity, encourage open dialogue and provide a safe space for sharing experiences, challenges and triumphs. Whether you are deeply rooted in the environmental sector or just starting your journey, our Network is here to amplify your voice, address barriers and collectively advance the cause of diversity and inclusion in our professions.

Sarah Mukherjee (MBE), IEMA’s CEO, is Chair of the Network and hosts the quarterly meetings.

Like many People of Colour, I have become increasingly aware that business networks are one of the routes to success used by the people who have been – and in many cases still are – in charge; somewhere that is a safe space to talk about both the challenges you face and the successes you gain, with people who can support your professional journey. The People of Colour Network is all of those things, and it’s my privilege to chair it.

Why should I join?

Any member of the People of Colour Network can also join the optional Teams channel and informal coffee and chat Teams meetings which are held every month at lunchtime.

Both are a safe space for the network to communicate outside of the action-focused meetings every quarter.

Please email info@diversesustainability.net for more information, we’d be more than happy to support you.
